With the particularly important position, tourism and aquaculture are increasingly developing along with busy maritime traffic around the island. This contributes to the economy of the government and local community; however, these activities are placing a heavy burden of pollution on the marine environment, not only in the reserve but also the East Sea. Production activities of people and industrial parks in HCM city and local people in Can Gio have been discharging many different types of waste and compounds such as plastic waste, inorganic substances and heavy metals, threatening the environment and biota in the entire coastal district. To date, official studies on the accumulation of pollutants in this reserve are still limited, mainly due to the lack of a database. This article aims to report the environmental polluting compounds including nutrients from aquaculture wastewater, microplastics and heavy metals discharged directly into canals in Can Gio. The final part of this article presents potential strategies for environmental protection in this reserve.
