Tài liệu Perspectives of lecturers on CDIO-based academic programs at University of Transport Ho Chi Minh City(Giao thông vận tải, 2023) Vũ Thị Lan AnhThis article reports a quantitative study using a close-ended questionnaire to survey the lecturers’ perspectives on the implementation of CDIO-based (Conceive, Design, Implement, Operate) academic programs at University of Transport Ho Chi Minh City (UTH). By analyzing the data collected from the responses of 106 lecturers working at University of Transport Ho Chi Minh City , the study finds that the challenges on the application of CDIO-based education relating to the university, the lecturers and the students. With the challenges relating to the university, the impacts, from the strongest down, are the lack of workspace to practice, the large-scale class, unclear assessment instructions, and unclear syllabi for practising engineering skills. On the lecturers’ part, four challenges are, from the strongest down, the lack of seminars for lecturers to deeply study the new academic program, few interactions in the lecturer community, lecturer’s constancies of the traditional teaching methods, and lecturers' having no information concerning the CDIO philosophy. Within the limit of this article, the barriers regarding the students are not discussed. With 106 respondents for the survey, accounting for 18.59% of the lecturer community at UTH, the results are statistically significant with a confidence level of 95% and a margin error of 0.05 to generalize the community of 570 lecturers working at the university.Tài liệu Comparing some euphemisms in English and Vietnamese to find similarities and differences(Giao thông vận tải, 2023) Lê Thị Hoàng Nga; Bùi Minh TiếnAs a special language phenomenon, euphemism is used to avoid embarrassment or to ease the sting of harsh words. The existence and origin of euphemisms seem to be universal. However, each language community has its own way of thinking based on different social - cultural environment [6]. This brings to euphemisms in each language a different semantic environment. In actual communication, the participants in communication are more or less faced with situations where they cannot directly say something, or if speaking directly, it will make the listeners and even the speakers feel awkward. In such cases, indirect expression is the tendency that the speaker will choose to avoid inconvenience to speakers as well as to the listeners. Although this has brought both teachers and students enormous benefits, some challenges in how to teach and learn English successfully continue questioning the educational systems globally, including Vietnam. Hardly has any breakthrough been achieved so far in Vietnam, actually. Vietnamese learners of English at tertiary level, especially English majored freshmen, nearly have no effective way of learning to improve their skills in English for various reasons, which makes the quality of learning has become abysmally poor. This paper aims at (i) identifying positive attitudes of English majored freshmen at University of Transport Ho Chi Minh City (UTH) toward project-based learning (PBL) as an approach of learning English; (ii) confirming the efficiency of this approach for them to improve their learning English generally, and basic English skills including listening, speaking, reading, writing particularly. A mixed methodology was applied for the study, and 44 English majors from Institute of Language and Social Science (ILASS) – UTH were kindly requested to join the survey for data collection and analysis. The findings reveal that almost participants show their positive attitudes and interests in the PBL, and they also agree PBL facilitates them much in improving their English skills. Not only respond within seconds to the questions given, but it can also generate indistinguishable text as human-written. Also, it can involve conversations with users in the most natural way in comparison with other chatbots. In this article, the story of GPT-3, Chat GPT, and their establisher (Open AI) will be briefly crafted. Some extensive literature reviews and conducted experiments with this artificial intelligence (AI) software, especially in terms of educational perspectives are also clarified in this paper. There are more and more English centers in the world, especially in Vietnam. A variety of courses have been designed to meet the international standards as well as the demands society in academic institutions and English language centers. However, the learners are still not completely satisfied with the courses because of unsolved problems. Pedagogy of the second language learners may struggle in speaking lessons due to different reasons. This paper, therefore, attempts to systematize practical problems and their reasons of adult learners. The cases of Vietnamese and Omani learners are described based on thepractical experience of a CELTA-certified English teacher, an observer in the higher education and a typical IELTS learner. As the result of interviews, pronunciation is the most common difficulty in speaking English which is affected mainly by the learners’ mother tongue. Most of Vietnamese learners have a similar problem which is called “vietlish language”. The term “task-based” is now more popular to most English teachers and attracts their attention in creating interesting and meaningful lessons for their students. This paper aims at presenting the background of task-based approach, giving definitions of learning tasks and describing various types of tasks used in the classroom such as listing, ordering and sorting, comparing, problem solving, sharing personal experiences and creative tasks. In addition, a TBLT framework including pre task, task cycle and language focus are carefully presented to provide some guidance on teaching and learning procedure.
